Lacking Community?

on July 12, 2011

I woke up this morning from a dream in which I was sitting at a very large, round table.  There were several couples of different ages and backgrounds at this table, and a couple of older single women.  One of the older women was speaking to the group about God’s character and the group was interacting in the conversation. There was a sweet since of love and unity.  We were also during this time of fellowship enjoying a meal together.  The women speaking was full of wisdom and understanding.  All those who spoke were treated with a common respect and those listening were incredibly encouraged. These people knew one another, and yet knew Christ in one another.  There was a genuineness of care and concern between them and a gentleness toward each other.  It was like being a new Mom and holding a new-born for the first time.

Over the years our family has searched for a place like this.  Still searching.  Maybe this dream is our hope being realized.  Beloved, I believe with all my heart that we are to be so a part of one another that we don’t know where one starts and the other ends. Our differences should strengthen the bond between us and cause us to grow.  The New Testament church in Acts Chapter 2 experienced this;

44And all who believed (who adhered to and trusted in and relied on Jesus Christ) were united and [together] they had everything in common; 45And they sold their possessions (both their landed property and their movable goods) and distributed the price among all, according as any had need. 46And day after day they regularly assembled in the temple with united purpose, and in their homes they broke bread [including the Lord’s Supper]. They partook of their food with gladness and simplicity and generous hearts, 47Constantly praising God and being in favor and goodwill with all the people; and the Lord kept adding [to their number] daily those who were being saved [from spiritual death].

Our churches do have a form of camaraderie within its confines.  We proudly say we attend ______.  We see the same folk, we hug them, we say hello, we genuinely care for them, but then, we go home.  There may be some amongst us who come together for an occasion, a birthday, a ballgame, someone gets ill so we feed the family…

But, is this the same as we read here in Acts with true fellowship and true community where everyone’s needs are met, their purpose is united, they have the same goals, and their fellowship is daily.  Where each person brings to the table the gift the Lord has given them and willing shares it and it is willing received.  Where families share meals together and their daily plans are intricately woven into one another’s lives, not just when it is convenient, but even when its hard.  Where is the strength of community where people love as Jonathan and David loved and in loyalty laid down their lives for each other? Where deep friendships are lasting and hope is unending. (see 1 Samuel 18)  Where no one falls because they are being held.  A three strand chord is not easily broken.  Where dreams are encouraged and promises are kept.  Where the old and young work together and the oldest and youngest are never forgotten. Where the focus is not on the negative, but what Christ is doing and what he wants to do.

This morning I pray Father, that the American Church would stop trying to build individual Kingdoms and work together to build the Kingdom.  I ask that the lonely be placed in families, the hungry be filled, the heart’s be turned, and many added daily.  I ask Lord that you begin to show us who are they we are called to build together side by side with, who are they who will be keepers of promises, who are those loyal to the same cause -carrying Your heart.  May Your Kingdom come to earth and may we truly discover we are part of one another.  Lord I offer my family to be used in this way and for Your glory.  In Jesus Name

Father Bring the Pieces and the People Together

1 John 1:7
But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.

1 Corinthians 1:9
God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

 1 John 2-4 the life was manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness, and declare to you that eternal life which was with the Father and was manifested to us that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ.  And these things we write to you that your joy may be full.
